Baldur's Gate 4 gaat komen maar niet van de Belgische studio Larian

Baldur’s Gate 3 de immens geprezen RPG won afgelopen jaar meerdere game van het jaar prijzen bij verschillende evenementen. Zowel de gaming community als de internationale game media zijn het erover eens dat Baldur’s Gate 3 de beste game is van 2023.

Ondanks het succes, heeft de Belgische studio Larian Games besloten om geen vervolg te maken. Larian blijft Baldur’s Gate 3 ondersteunen met updates, maar het volgend project van Larian wordt iets nieuws. Larian CEO Sven Vincke had hierover het volgende te zeggen:

“We’ll forever be proud of it, but we won’t continue it. We’re not going to make new expansions which everybody is expecting us to do. We’re not going to make Baldur’s Gate 4, which everybody is expecting us to do. We’re going to move on. We’re going to move away from DnD and we’re going to start making a new thing”.

Dungeon’s and Dragons licentiehouder Hasbro en Wizards of the Coast, willen wel graag door met de serie, vooral na het succes van Baldur’s Gate 3. Als Larian het niet doet, dan maar een andere studio. senior vice president of digital strategy and licensing genaamd Eugene Evans heeft aangegeven dat er nu gesprekken gevoerd worden met eventuele partner studio’s. De president wil niet dat fans weer 25 jaar moeten wachten op een nieuwe Baldur’s Gate-game.

“We’re now talking to lots of partners and being approached by a lot of partners who are embracing the challenge of, what does the future of the Baldur’s Gate franchise look like?”

“We certainly hope that it’s not another 25 years, as it was from Baldur’s Gate 2 to 3, before we answer that. But we’re going to take our time and find the right partner, the right approach, and the right product that could represent the future of Baldur’s Gate. We take that very, very seriously, as we do with all of our decisions around our portfolio. We don’t rush into decisions as to who to partner with on products or what products we should be considering.”
